On June 17-25, 2005, our first foreign mission trip was taken by 15 members of Mt. Calvary. Through God’s help and the efforts of MOST Ministries (Mission Opportunities Short Term), we were able to help 955 people of a poor province of Nicaragua receive some 2,000 pairs of glasses and sunglasses. We traveled through Houston, TX and then down to Managua. We felt right at home as we were bused on a 1986 BlueBird school bus made in Ft. Valley to the city of Chinandega.
There we helped the local Canadian Lutheran Missionary church for two and a half days. The local church staff registered the people and evangelized to them while we served the people for their eyeglass needs. There were eight stations: Registration, Education, Nursing, Distance Testing, Reading Testing, Dispersing, Fitting and Witnessing.
It was such a joy to see the faces of some people that could not read their Bible in over 20 years receive a pair of glasses and gleam with happiness. People that were nearsighted finally were able to see down the street. A woman could finally see her granddaughter clearly for the first time.
We were fortunate to travel about an hour northeast of Chinandega for two days to the small farm village of Villa Salvadorita. These people lived in little 10x10 huts with their chickens and cows in the back yard. Pigs roamed the dirt streets eating the garbage thrown out by the people. However, this was the most rewarding place of all because the people were so kind and appreciative. The little concrete church had a tin roof and it was really HOT in the afternoon. But the group continued to serve without complaint and gave 110% during the whole trip.
The whole mission team thanks everyone at Mt. Calvary that helped support with money and especially prayers. If you would like to know more about the mission trip, just ask any one of the members.
We hope and pray that this is just the first of many mission trips out of Mt. Calvary. Please consider it for a future year. It is a rewarding experience that will change your life.
